Getting Started

If you don’t know where to begin, the following will give you a quick step-by-step overview of how to purchase a conversion van or vehicle and how to make modifications for your current vehicle.

  • Locate a Mobility Equipment DealerDONE!

    • R&J Mobility Service is your local Mobility Equipment Dealer. R&J Mobility Service should be your first stop in the buying process. We have been in the mobility equipment industry since 1979 and we are accredited in NMEDA’s Quality Assurance Program. Our certified mobility consultants are ready to assist and evaluate your personal mobility needs based on your specific situation including how your needs may change over time. We will advise you as well as install and service the mobility equipment you select. Unlike an automotive dealer, our emphasis is on mobility equipment and handicap vehicles – matching the right solution with the right person. We will also advise you about any funding assistance that may be available to you.
  • Consult a Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist
    • If you or a loved one is in a wheelchair and want to start driving, it is recommended that you contact a professional Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) who will evaluate your needs and provide you with a prescription for mobility equipment. A CDRS, with knowledge of your specific medical and visual conditions, can provide a comprehensive evaluation and help you determine your safe driving potential.
    • An assessment should include:
      • Vision
      • Perception
      • Functional ability
      • Reaction time
      • Behind-the-wheel evaluation
    • A CDRS will also provide the required training that you may need to effectively and safely drive a modified vehicle.
  • Make Your Final Selection and Purchase
    • After your initial consultation, you may decide to purchase your wheelchair van or car directly from us. If you decide to purchase a new or used vehicle from an automotive dealer and have it adapted with an equipment installation, you’ll have the recommended vehicle guidelines determined between you and your mobility consultant at R&J Mobility to help guide your purchase decision. Our mobility consultants will also help you with any funding applications that may be required before the final purchase is made.
  • Training on Your New Mobility Equipment
    • After your mobility equipment purchase, you’ll need to learn how to use it. If the equipment is used for driving, it may require several training sessions with your CDRS.
  • Mobility Reimbursements
    • When available, submit your Mobility Assistance Reimbursement Application to the appropriate vehicle manufacturer. The step-by-step process may differ from company to company, so it’s best to visit the website for your particular vehicle manufacturer and download the correct forms.
